August 8-9, 2009 Conference on Lime and Lime Kilns
The Friends of the Cowell Lime Works Historic District is hosting the first-ever Conference on Lime and Lime Kilns in California History.
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear experts from around California speak on a variety of lime-related topics including kiln technology, people, uses of lime, Spanish and Mexican period lime making, research methods, and how to interpret historic sites for the public. There will also be displays of historic artifacts, photos, and publications. We will actually make some lime! On the Sunday field trip participants will visit six historic lime kilns. Lunch and breakfast provided.
Cosponsors include the Agricultural History Project, Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks, Museum of Art & History, Mountain Parks Foundation, Pajaro Valley Historical Association, Santa Cruz City Historic Preservation Commission, and the Santa Cruz Museum Association. June 13, 2009 Evergreen Cemetery Tour
Join members of the Museum of Art & History’s Researchers Anonymous group for a walk through Evergreen Cemetery in Santa Cruz. Several local historians will tell about pioneers buried there including lime manufacturer Albion P. Jordan. Meet at the cemetery, 10 a.m., free. Sunday, April 13, 2007—Lecture, Senior Center, Highlands Park
The book's authors presented a slide-illustrated
lecture on the history of lime making in the San Lorenzo Valley. The talk was at the Senior Center,
in Ben Lomond. Proceeds and book sales benefited the Museum.
July 14, 21, 28—Televised Lime Kiln Tour
A walking tour of the Cowell Lime Works Historic District at UCSC was video taped for Community Television of Santa Cruz County and aired on Santa Cruz Comcast cable channel 25 on July 14, July 21, and July 28 at 6 p.m. It featured Frank Perry and other local historians as they explore the old lime kilns, cooperage, and worker cabins at UCSC.
The tour took place on June 9, 2007.
July 24, 2007—Capitola Book Cafe
The Capitola Book Cafe hosted a book signing for Lime Kiln Legacies on Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. Frank Perry talked about the book, answered questions, and signed copies. Several of the other authors were also be there to sign copies.
The Book Cafe is located at 1475 41st Avenue in the Kings Plaza shopping Center (next to the Rite Aid store) in Capitola. For more information call the store at 831-462-4415 or visit the Capitola Book Cafe website.
July and August, 2007—Santa Cruz Public Library (Main Branch)
An exhibit about the book was on display at the California Room of the Santa Cruz Public Library, 224 Church Street in Santa Cruz. The exhibit featured enlargements of some of the photos from the book and was hosted by the Santa Cruz Genealogy Society.
The exhibit ran through the end of August, 2007.
June 2, 2007, Museum of Art & History
Book signing on Saturday, June 2, 2007, from 1:00 to 3:00 in the afternoon at the Museum of Art & History, 705 Front Street in Santa Cruz.
We had a fine time at the first book signing for Lime Kiln Legacies. If you missed it we hope to see you at the Capitola Book Cafe in July.
